Looking Back...

Saturday June 8th 2013
Hammer making with Nathan Robertson
(submitted by Paul Crosby)

The day started with 10 or so selecting our hammer blanks, and firing up the gas forges. After a brief lesson we were drilling and hot punching our stock. Everyone was helping each other, striking, or holding a flatter, or simply watching the forge for stock ready to be pulled. Doug Delury and Mike Emig were very helpful. Their heavy hitting skills as tandem strikers made shaping our hammers a bit easier. Nathan was fun to work with and full of great ideas, and helpful hints. I especially enjoyed the hardening and heat tempering process. After hardening, and before the final heat treat, we did some clean up and final shaping on Nathan’s Bader belt sanders (very impressive machines). After the tempering and cooling, we picked out our handles. It was a long day, but everyone left with a hammer, and a good experience. I definitely look forward to future opportunities to work with Nathan the next time he’s in town.

PLEASE NOTE: Someone who attended this class left a sledge hammer and a pair of tongs. Both had orange paint on them and the tongs had ISH stamped into the side of them. Please pick them up or email us (when our website is back up).
