Paul Crosby's Damascus demo

Apr 19, 2015

Paul outdid himself today with a masterful talk and actual demonstration about the history, mechanics and processes used in making Damascus (patterned steel, water steel - many names meaning the same thing) from different steel types, essentially based on carbon content, and the various ways one may manipulate the differences to create predictable patterns, such as the ladder or chevron pattern, and so on.

Paul brought a number of pieces of Damascus he created , some folded and welded 40 times, some 80, some more. Paul brought a number of other "tools" such as the new propane gas forge he recently designed and made ...and used today in demonstrating the working a "billet" and forge welding its' several layers of different types of steel.

Paul's knowledge about Damascus and his striking ability to clearly articulate his subject was top notch. We had a very enjoyable day.topped off by James Arlen Gillaspie, Master Armorer, dropping by towards the end of today' meet with a couple of authentic 16th century pieces as well one of his own creations, an articulated gauntlet glove. All in all, a special day.

Don't miss next month (May 31) when Rob Gallerani will demonstrate his simple process for electroplating steel with copper.

#### Please note, if anyone took pictures today, Paul ( phc2112@yahoo.com) would appreciate copies, as his camera today went on the blink. Thanks.
